REVISED - Outfielders – Must stand back a minimum of 36 feet (12 Yards or 10.9728 Metres) from the base paths until the pitchers throw has crossed the plate – thus avoiding a crowded infield. The purpose to establish a minimum is to stop players from “creeping” in close to the base paths. An outfielder should not be able to field a ball and run into 2nd and make a tag.

Little League Minor A Philosophy
In
the Minor A program we stress the fundamentals of baseball. Basic
techniques are taught in an atmosphere that is enjoyable. The
players should be taught how to play at the various positions and must be given
an opportunity to play in the infield as well as the outfield.
Try
to make the games and practices a positive experience for all players on the
team. You should avoid criticizing a player in public. You should also ensure
that your players are taught to respect the opposing team and umpires. Jeering
and other examples of poor sportsmanship are not acceptable.
Opening
day
All
teams are to gather at the Majors diamond at Memorial Park at
Home
and Visiting Team Responsibilities
Each team is designated as home team
for ½ of their games. The responsibilities of the home team and visiting team
differ.
Home
team Uses
3rd base dugout
Prepares
the field - do not
mark the base lines between 1st, 2nd, & 3rd.
Provide
2 new game balls for each game.
Visiting
team
Uses 1st base dugout.
Provide
the scorekeeper. Please ensure that your scorekeeper writes on the top of
every page of the score book: 1) Date
and time of game, 2) Teams playing, indicating who is home & visiting
Regular
Season Games
Each
team is scheduled to play 12 games (6 as home team and 6 as visiting team).
The
2 teams playing Saturday on the Majors
field are charged with preparing the Majors diamond and then doing the
post game field cleanup.
Call up procedures
These
procedures are intended to:
a)
assist teams in fielding a competitive number of players for each game.
b)
provide the stronger players with an opportunity to play baseball at the
next level.
All
teams will be asked by the coordinators for their division to submit up to 4
players for the call-up list for the next division. It is recommended that the
names of only the stronger players from each team be submitted as they will be
playing against older children and at a more sophisticated level of baseball. We
want this to be a positive experience for children playing up.
The
coordinators will compile lists for each division using the names submitted by
the teams.
A
team that knows that they will not have a sufficient number of players at a game
can ask their coordinator for up to 2 call-up players to avoid forfeiture. It is
expected that such teams requesting call-ups will not be going with a full
roster. For example, a Minor A team knowing that 5 players will be away could
request 2 players to be called up to take the game roster to 10 players. While
Minor A teams can technically play with as few as 8 players and avoid
forfeiture, we all recognize that is not ideal. It is recommended that teams
that know they will not have a minimum of 7
of their own players present at any one game forfeit
the game in advance.
The
Majors coaches make their call-ups through the Minor A Co-Coordinators.
The Minor A Sr. Coaches through the Minor A Co-Coordinators while the
Minor A Jr. Coaches will speak with the Minor B Coordinator for call ups.( walter@walterwells.ca)
Players
will not be called up for a game if they have a scheduled game in their own
division on that day. Called up players will not participate in the practices of
the calling up team except for the warm up prior to the game in question. They
should wear their regular team uniform. They are not eligible to pitch in the
game for which they have been called up but can otherwise participate fully.
Teams
may only use players that have been arranged by the coordinators.
Use of a player without the prior knowledge of the coordinators will
result in a game forfeiture.
Game
Results and Standings
At
the end of each game, the coach of the winning
team shall email the score to the Minor A Co-Coordinators
Team standings will be uploaded to the Minors A website.
All-Star Games
The
all star games are scheduled for Saturday June 6 on the Majors
diamond.
The
coaches with the highest winning percentage will coach the respective teams.
All
regular season rules will apply except that no child should pitch more than one
inning.
A
coin toss will establish home/visiting teams. Winner of the toss has their
choice of being home or visiting team.
Playoffs
Play-offs
will take place in the two-week period between Sunday June 7 and Closing Day on
Saturday June 20. All Minor A teams will be in the playoffs.
In
case of poor weather, coaches must contact one another and determine if a game
will be held. If
the coaches determine that it should be cancelled, the home team coach must
contact the Ump Coordinator Rick Jones
(cell 604-619-3334) at least
one hour before the scheduled start time to advise of the cancellation so
that Rick can tell the umpires not attend. Please
also notify the Minor A coordinators so that the game can be rescheduled.
Skills
There
are certain basic skills which should be covered in the Minor A program:
1.
Throwing
the ball – the players should be taught the proper way to grip the ball
and shown how to step and throw with a proper follow through.
2.
Catching
the ball – the players should be shown how to move the body in front of
the ball, catch the ball with two hands, and prepare to throw.
3.
Fielding
a fly ball – The players need to be shown how to set up beneath a fly ball
and how to make the catch with two hands.
4.
Fielding
ground balls – the players should be shown the ready position, how to move
to either side to receive a ground ball and how to receive a ground ball with
both hands.
5.
Hitting
– the players should be shown the proper grip on the bat and the proper stance
and position in the batters box. They should be shown the stride, the swing, and
the follow through.
6.
Base
running – the players should be taught how to run through first base, how
to slide, how to steal, how to tag up and how to receive and follow signals from
the base coach.
7.
Pitching
– either the wind-up or the set position should be used. Pitchers should be
shown the starting position, the rocker step, the pivot and kick, the delivery
and follow through.
The
field
In
Dunbar Little League we use 165-foot home run line.
This local rule allows for a few home runs during the season. If a hit ball
should roll past the 165-foot line the player is not limited to two bases in
Minor A Senior but it’s a ground rule double in Minor A Junior.
Time
limits
The
schedule allows 2 hours per game on the weekends. This should be sufficient to
finish a 5 inning game. On the occasions that games are longer than expected,
the coaches must monitor the time and, if necessary, the 4th inning
will become the unlimited run inning.
Umpires
Rule
number one, two, three, four, etc: the player umpires are always right!
If a coach
disagrees with a call due to an interpretation of the rules, they may approach
the player umpire and discuss the play but that is all they may do. The umpire
coordinator, Rick Jones, is responsible for training and providing feedback to
the umpires. Any feedback from the coaches relating to umps should be directed
to Rick Jones.
If
an umpire does not show up for a game this should immediately be reported to
Rick Jones. The coaches should then select one or two temporary umpires and
proceed with the game.
At
the beginning of the season the player umpires are instructed to give a generous
strike zone. This encourages batters to swing and not wait for four balls to
walk to 1st base. The strike zone narrows to a regular strike zone as
the season progresses and the accuracy of pitching improves.
Safety
All players are required to wear an athletic support with cup for games and practices.
